From the moment you walk through the door the friendly atmosphere hits you. You are shown to a beautifully decorated and relaxing room to await your treatment. An overview of the services we offer
Traditional Thai Massage

Traditional Thai Massage is a 2500-year-old technique for relaxing the body and quietening the mind. It can help to relieve many physical problems such as back pain, tense shoulders and neck, stiffness, poor posture, indigestion and sciatica as well as more mental problems like stress and lethargy.

The basic form of the massage is performed fully clothed (no oils are used) on a mat on the floor. The technique involves putting gentle but firm pressure on the body with the palms and thumbs, as well as relaxing stretching of the limbs and back. In this way it works effectively on skin, muscle, the organs and the skeletal structure. Blood and lymph circulation is increased and waste substances are removed from tissues.

If you have existing aches or pains, inform the therapist who can provide a focussed deep tissue massage to help relax and ease the muscles (please note, this is not suitable for injuries – these must be discussed with the therapist before any treatment).

Traditional Thai massage can be performed while fully clothed (light/thin garments only). You are welcome to wear your own or we can provide suitable clothing for your session.

Herbal Compress Massage

Thai Style Steam Heated Herbal Compress Massage has been practiced by Thai healers for many hundreds of years. The hot herbal compress provides a truly unique experience that stimulates the senses, whilst the deep penetrating warmth and blended herbs sooth and alleviates muscle tension, aches and pains, and trigger a powerful body purification and detoxification process.

The treatment combines eastern massage techniques with a light pressure patting, rolling, kneading and gentle but deeply effective massage. The heat from the compress carries the herbal essences and the essential oils deep into the skin, underlying tissues and organs. The treatment brings about a deep sensation of comfort and warmth, the compresses are soaked and then steamed to provide a deep penetrating warmth whilst stimulating the body to detoxify and heal itself. The warm herbal compresses are made up of a blend of up to 20 traditional Thai herbs (including turmeric, camphor, tamarind, lemongrass and kaffir lime) renowned for their invigorating, purifying, tension relieving and capacity to improve respiration and soothe general aches and pains.

Indian Head Massage

Indian Head Massage has been practised in India for over a thousand years as part of everyday family life as a form of grooming. Indian head massage was brought to the west by Narendra Mehta in the 1970′s and the therapy was extended to include the face, ears, neck, shoulders and upper arms.

Indian Head Massage works on areas affected by mental and emotional stress. In Western culture today we spend much of our time in our heads, so this treatment can really help to calm the mind and is surprisingly deeply relaxing. Working with a firm and gentle rhythm it helps to relieve muscular discomfort and tension as well as calming the spirit and aiding relaxation, it also improves circulation in the head, enhances the senses and promotes clear thinking.

The massage usually begins with the upper back, where a combination of deep massage and pressure points help to relax the muscles and to loosen and melt knots. Moving through the shoulders and upper arms further releases the common spots for holding stress and tension, and then working deeply into the neck where tension accumulates relieves headaches and improves cerebral spinal fluid circulation. Moving up to the scalp, techniques are used that stimulate, relax and revive the whole of the head, increasing circulation and promoting healthy hair. Finally the treatment may include a gentle face massage with techniques that help circulation, skin tone, and sinus and headache problems.

Indian Head Massage will soothe away stress and tension, leaving you relaxed, revitalised and re-energised. This is a very popular treatment, perfect for promoting a calm mind, a stress-free body and for maintaining optimum health.

This therapy can be performed without oils with the client sitting and fully clothed (although a light t-shirt or vest is best suited for the treatment).

Hot Stone Massage

Hot stone massage uses soothing oils, warm basalt and sometimes cold marble stones to relax your muscles, allowing for a deeper and more intense all-over massage.

In hot stone therapy, your therapist applies smooth, water-heated basalt stones to key points on your body. This direct heat relaxes your muscles, which means that the massage itself is more effective and intense than it would be otherwise. The size of the stones varies, according to which part of the body your therapist is treating.

It is generally accepted that alternating treatments of warmth and cold are beneficial, and help to soothe an aching body. What we often need to do is combine both hot and cold. There’s a method behind the apparent madness of leaping from a toasty sauna into an icy pool: hot stone therapy uses the same principle. Heat expands the blood vessels, cold constricts them.

The combination of relaxing warmth and refreshing coolness is thought to encourage the body to detox and heal, increasing lymph flow and helping to flush out waste. With the addition of heat, your body becomes relaxed in a much shorter space of time, and your therapist can focus on a deep working of the tissues using both the stones and her hand strokes.

History of Thai Massage

Thai Massage is a relaxing and rejuvenating experience. It has been practiced for centuries in Far East and Thailand. It is a deep tissue massage using no oils as do many Western Massages. Thai Massage incorporates the use of hands, thumbs, elbows, forearms, knees and feet to manipulate various body zones with acupressure, deep muscle compression, yoga, stretching, joint mobilization and reflexology. The massage focuses on the muscoskeletal system ( the bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues ). It is especially beneficial for those who find themselves stiff, sore or tired from over exertion in work or sports. A Thai Massage will leave the client feeling totally refreshed and invigorated. The body will benefit from the release of tension, restoration of vitality and allows the free flow of the bodies energy. It improves circulation, flexibility and muscle tone as well as encouraging lymphatic functions to help detoxify the body.

Successive kings promoted and developed native, natural massage techniques even though it was mainly focused in the family. The art of massage has been passed down through the family practitioners over the generations. Today it is very popular both in Thailand and throughout the developed world.

Wat Pho MuralsAmong the Thai people, Wat Pho is well known as the first university of Thailand. It was King Rama III (1824-1851) who ordered the renovation of the temple, and made the temple the centre of knowledge by having the temple walls covered with numerous stone tablets inscribed with writings about various branches of knowledge, so that the knowledge could be spread more widely and easily.

The king also ordered the attachment of pictures of traditional Thai massage showing various channels and points on the human body, and the placement of statues of Yoga postures and 317 marble slabs bearing 1,100 formulae of curative herbal medicines in the temple. As a result, Wat Pho became an appropriate place for providing knowledge on traditional Thai massage and a school for teaching this subject was opened over 40 years ago, being the first school of this kind in Thailand.

Wat Pho’s Thai Traditional Medical and Massage School offers courses on Thai Traditional Medicine and Practice, Thai Herbal Drugs and Thai Traditional Massage.
